Ethnographic trip to Angola
Arrive in the Angolan capital city, Luanda. Visit the ancient and iconic Catholic church, which was originally built for the peace agreement between Angola and Congo. Explore the coin museum and the anthropology museum. End the day at the Moon Viewpoint for a panoramic view of the city.
Start the day with a peaceful breakfast in Luanda’s city center. Then, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lubango, scheduled around 10:00 AM. After arrival in southern Angola, meet your guides and transfer to Pululukwa Lodge or Casper Lodge (or similar). In the afternoon, enjoy a brief city tour of Lubango.
After breakfast, depart for Chibia. Upon arrival, visit the main city of Chibia and spend the night in a lodge. While in the Chibia area, explore the Mumuila tribe. The Mumuila are a Bantu-speaking agricultural tribe. The women are known for decorating their hair with clay and glass beads, and wearing thick shell necklaces that indicate their social and marital status. Later, visit the Mumuila Mountains, where a subgroup of the tribe migrated to preserve their culture from Portuguese colonization. Overnight at Pululukwa Lodge.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the Mumuila tribe and embark on a 4-hour road trip to Xangongo. Visit the Umbi tribe and encounter the elephant girl of the year, who is identified by a ficus on her head, as well as a man with Mukanje (traditional adornments). You’ll also visit the largest baobab tree in Africa. Spend the night at Cunene Hotel.
After breakfast, head to Oncocua, a 6-hour journey. Along the way, make stops at several villages. Upon arrival in Oncocua, explore this small town, which was colonized by the Portuguese in the 1940s. The local market is where various tribal groups gather to trade goods, foods, and handmade products. Enjoy an overnight camping experience in tents set up in the village’s main area.
Breakfast. Half-day tribal immersion. The area is inhabited by different traditional Bantu tribes, including cattle herders such as MuNdimba, Muhakaona, and Mu-Himba, as well as a small group of hunter-gatherers, the Tua. These people live in the sacred mountains of Oncocua and preserve the Himba style of dress. Despite living in poverty, the pride of Himba and Hakaona decorations is evident. The guide will explain the system that has almost disappeared in other parts of Africa. Drive to the remote banks of the Cunene River, the natural border with Namibia, to enjoy the virgin ecosystem and meet semi-nomadic Himba. Himba, one of the most famous tribes in Africa, continue to wear traditional clothes, rubbing their skin with animal fat and red powder. They are cattle breeders and one of the richest tribes in Angola. The MuHakaona tribe, also cattle breeders, honor their traditional healers. The Mudimba tribe's hairstyles are unique and a work of art, especially the afro styles worn by women with young children. After some time of immersion, we will return to the city of Lubango for accommodation at the Pululukua hotel.
After breakfast, drive to Namibe, passing through the high point of the Humpata region. Visit Miradouro da Leba, a scenic viewpoint along the way. Meet the nomadic Mucubal tribe during the journey. After the visit, head towards Mungongo Island, a unique desert island formed by a single family. Arrive in the city of Namibe and stay overnight at the Hotel Chic ChicHB.
Visit the desert town of Virei and reach the Rocky Mountains of Tchitundohulo. See ancient paintings in the rock cave of the town of Tubo Cubal and spend the night at a camp.
Depart for Lagoa do Arcos, a famous great oasis in the middle of the desert valleys. Enjoy the landscapes, contrasts, and natural formations in the mountains. Continue to the Red Hills of Curoca for a mystical night under the stars. Explore hidden corners, listen to the stories of the place, connect with nature, and enjoy a sunset full of vibrant colors. Night in a tent.
Renewed energy after breakfast, we head to Dunas Rosas in Lona National Park, famous for its colors and its proximity to the sea. Spend the day enjoying activities like surfing, climbing, running, or simply relaxing on these natural sofas. Night in a tent.
After a short return to the city, visit the famous Welwitschia plant and explore the city of Tombwa. Enjoy the coastal scenery before continuing to Namibe for an overnight stay at a hotel.
Start the day with breakfast and a visit to the Nguendelengo tribal villages. Have lunch in Bibala and continue to Lubango for the final visit before heading to the airport in Luanda.
